As the subject of “philosophy” is considered by the thoughtful Christian, it is vital that two basic passages from the Bible be kept firmly planted in your mind:

(1) “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Proverbs 1:7).

And, (2) “See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ” (Colossians 2:8).

In the quest to understand more about the fundamental principles and realities of this world, it seems to me that it would be relatively easy to lose sight of the knowledge of God and His revealed truth in the Bible. Therefore, every Christian must be “on guard” to protect themselves from being taken “captive by philosophy and empty deceit.” Having been forewarned, let us then embark upon this inquiry into man’s attempt to understand the mysteries of God’s truth.
